      <image:title>Holly Hickmore - The Sculptor</image:title>
<image:caption>Holly has a passion for sculpture that is equalled by her love of the countryside. Holly trained at The Hungarian School of Art, where she was exposed to a classical education with a strong grounding in anatomy before returning home to set up her studio in the heart of the Hampshire countryside. Here Holly works on public and private commissions alongside her own practice. She often finds inspiration from the wildlife surrounding her whilst frequently returning to the subject of the horse. Holly strives to find the essence of her subject, to create a felt response through a continual dialogue between form, material and subject. Holly works alongside a highly skilled team to create large scale sculpture, using the renowned Morris Singer foundry to cast her work in bronze.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Each project will begin with a discussion about subject, composition, scale and installation. Then it becomes about gathering information through further consultation, site visits, spending time with the subject taking photographs and measurements before returning to the studio to build an armature and start work in clay.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Commissioning</image:title>
<image:caption>There is a three-part staged payment schedule that enables the client to maintain an intimate connection with the commissioned work during the sculptural process. Thorough consultation occurs before transcending each milestone, thus providing transparency and control for the client. The installation of the sculpture is the last milestone where the final payment is given.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Commissioning</image:title>
<image:caption>Holly likes to work from life where possible and encourages studio visits, thereby enhancing involvement for the client. When the sculptural image is agreed as complete by both the client and Holly, the mould making process begins. A wax positive is created to become the core of an investment mould from which the bronze sculpture will be formed. The bronze is then cast, patinated and prepared for installation.</image:caption>

<image:title>Latest Work - ‘Across cultures, horses have embodied ideals of liberty, independence, and the indomitable spirit of the untamed frontier. 'Artemis' captures these timeless qualities in a modern masterpiece, reflecting the majesty and nobility that horses symbolise worldwide. In ancient Greek mythology, Artemis was the Goddess of the Hunt, known for her strength and agility. Similarly, this sculpture pays homage to the power and resilience of these magnificent creatures that have inspired humanity throughout history. Just as Pegasus soared in Greek mythology, this sculpture invites us to reflect on the profound connection between humans and these magnificent creatures.’ JB, Morris Singer Foundry.</image:title>

      <image:title>Gallery - Barn Owl - Barn Owl</image:title>
<image:caption>Barn Owl was a winter project worked in clay next to a wood burning stove. Holly’s intention was to catch a likeness of a barn owl while keeping the true sense of the sharp attentiveness of an efficient hunter. It was important for Holly to work this piece on a branch, not only to give the barn owl a sense of place, but to elevate the sculpture to strengthen the gaze of the owl as it scans the area. “What I appreciated most about this project was the opportunity to learn more about the barn owl. Whilst working on this project I discovered our neighbours have an unobstructed view of a pair of barn owls living in their barn, returning each year to bring on a family. This was a superb chance to study the animal and learn about their family dynamics.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>This ambitious piece was conceived after attending the three day international dressage festival at Hartpury international arena. A magnificent display of dedication and control between horse and rider fuelled this project. Holly plays with the idea of the balance of power and sensitivity in this monumental sculpture. Its handling is both wild and considered and is impressive to behold. “I really enjoyed working on a piece of this scale - whilst its size gives the piece an imposing nature, it was important that every form was round and full to express the fluidity and romance of dressage.”</image:caption>

      <image:title>Gallery - Goose - Goose</image:title>
<image:caption>Goose was worked in the summer of 2020. It is a piece that realised an ambition of Holly’s after seeing Giam Bologna’s ‘Turkey’ on a trip to Florence years before. Holly’s intent was to create a sculpture unashamedly itself, confident, bereft of kitsch sentiment… a sculpture powerfully presenting the characteristics and attitude of an inquisitive goose. “It was a delight working on this piece; the familiarity of the goose as a subject meant I felt free to play with strong sculptural values and modes of mark making”</image:caption>

      <image:title>Gallery - Pheasant - Pheasant</image:title>
<image:caption>This piece was worked wax in the spring of 2020. The pheasant is an evocation of a proud bird in its prime, presenting itself as dominant as it struts across the countryside. The work itself is intensely worked, with applied heat and metal spatulas producing hard incisive mark making, generating a forceful sculptural pose. The length of this piece creates a strong architectural wedge softened by the curve of the breast and detail in the head. “I enjoyed working with the wax in all it’s different states concurrently, using a blowtorch to heat areas to make the material malleable and water to cool areas down so I could carve in detail. I love the drips and marbling left on the surface from using hot tools.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>This piece was worked wax in 2022 to act as a companion piece. In opposition in stance but also form, this straight and angler piece is constructed from a series of strong planes giving it a wonderfully contemporary feel. “I really enjoy the how these works interact.”</image:caption>

      <image:title>Gallery - Family of Roe Deer - Roe Deer</image:title>
<image:caption>Roe Deer is the first in the Roe Deer series sculpted in the autumn of 2017, shortly after Holly moved back to Hampshire, as a celebration of the beautiful wildlife that surrounds her studio in the Meon Valley. The feeling within this piece is soft, feminine, whilst powerfully attentive, as if arrested at the moment just before the deer bounds away after an unexpected rustle in a nearby hedge row, unsure whether to spring and bolt to safety. “The extension of the neck, large eyes and square pose were deeply considered whilst working on this piece. I focused on these features, not only to sculpt feminine and elegant form, but to create the coiled tension I felt during my encounters with roe deer in that moment before flight.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Gallery - Family of Roe Deer - Roe Deer Buck</image:title>
<image:caption>This powerful piece was sculpted in clay in the spring of 2018, after the success of the first edition in the Roe Deer series. It was conceived to counterpose the furtive gesture at the point of flight of Roe Deer: - an adult male standing firm and proud as protector of his family, ready to face down any adversary. Holly uses energetic handling of the clay to reveal her vision in this piece, giving weight to the potent vigour within the character of the buck. The feeling of energy and defiance can be felt most profoundly in the depth of the buck’s direct unyielding intense gaze. “Whilst working on this piece I considered the masculine nature of the roe deer buck. I love the grandeur the antlers give the animal and in this piece wanted to play with the powerful elements of the roe deer’s nature, rather than their furtive prey-like mannerisms. I wanted this piece to be firmly rooted to the ground; all the energy within the mark making is leaning into the pose.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Gallery - Family of Roe Deer - Roe Deer Looking</image:title>
<image:caption>Roe Deer Looking was conceived alongside Roe Deer Buck in the spring of 2019. As the third piece in this series, it operates as an extension of the family group - a deer grazing, protected by the Buck, comfortable, nevertheless alert with ears piqued, attentively scanning for danger, while her eyes move to assess the source of a disturbance. The language employed in this piece is open and immediate, full of energy and vigour, similar to that of the Roe Deer Buck, yet the handling of the clay is soft and somehow more feminine. “This piece is in a transitional state of being, it is ‘becoming’. I wanted to capture the passage of time just before and after the gesture I have sculpted. The twist in the pose creates an unbalanced stance, suggesting the movement of the leg. The handling of the clay is loose and less resolved than the others, with large sweeping gestures to emphasise the transitional nature of the pose”</image:caption>

<image:caption>This was a project taken on in the winter of 2020 when Holly was invited to visit Tweenhills stud during their foaling season. This meeting was set up in preparation to exhibit at the Royal Ascot week of summer racing and presented Holly with the wonderful opportunity to work on a larger than life size portrait of a beautifully bred foal. This filly was sired by the late world champion ‘Roaring Lion’, voted horse of the year in 2018 and out of a beautiful dam ‘Common Knowledge’, both stars from Qatar Racing. The foal portrait expresses deep sensitivity and potential power. In its handling the sculptural mark making is both open and deeply felt. The overall sculptural image presents an alert stance; one can feel energy in the pose as one has the sense the piece is about to step forward in a far from static bearing. “For me this piece is not only about the power and elegance of these born athletes, but about the innocence and curiosity found in the eye of this filly.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>This much loved Labrador was worked in wax in the winter of 2018. Holly‘s intention was to invest the qualities of the very best gundogs into this piece - devotion, attention and willingness to do as their master commands. Ghillie is an intensely worked, densely considered piece that has taken on both a universal quality of loyalty as man’s best friend, as well as the strong image of a beautifully bred working dog. “There was a point in this project where it became less about the formal qualities and more about the feeling of the piece. I was conscious not to use any hard tooling whilst working to let the piece grow slowly, with a gentle application of material in an effort to express the loving nature of this faithful dog.”</image:caption>

This energy and alertness reveals the temperament of an Irish terrier in a classic stance. “This project was taken on retrospectively to pay tribute to a much loved Irish Terrier. I worked from images taken throughout Murphy’s life, offering an estimable insight into the dog’s character and meant I felt deeply connected to this piece.”</image:caption>

A compelling series of tenets condensed in such an elegant and ethereal piece. “For me the scale of this piece was important to give emphasis to the delicate nature of a new born foal. I hope to capture how precious new life feels.”</image:caption>

      <image:title>Gallery - Start Gate - Start Gate</image:title>
<image:caption>This composition was first displayed at Royal Ascot in 2019 in the Queen Anne enclosure. Start Gate presents a composition of five horse heads in various states of piqued attentiveness, full of explosive energy, contained at the start gate like a coiled spring. Holly found inspiration for this piece through the Ancient Greek sculptures of the gods’ chariots of horses, fundamentally celebrating the power of the horse. “I enjoy each of these works as a part of a composition because each movement gives the other a counterpoint, I feel this builds the tension. I particularly like how the twists and slight inclinations cause the pieces to interact with each other.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Sun hit was sculpted in the winter of 2017. One can feel the deliberated decisions revealed in the applied wax, as Holly discovers form in the piece. The structure and surface revealed in the syntax has become Holly’s unique language. The consequence of this language is a beautifully revealed seasoned hunter, relaxed yet attentive with ears piqued ready to ‘crack on’, eager for the coming ride. “This project enabled me to immerse myself in an in-depth study to catch a likeness of a working hunter. As a part of my source material I was given a strong narrative of a memory from the client, this created a brief in an organic way and lead the composition of the pose.”</image:caption>

Arcadia was sculpted with the intention of evoking the feeling of intimacy and sensitivity felt by those who spend time with their horses - elucidating the special bond between horse and owner. “The most cherished memories I have with my horse are not in the ring, they in are the quiet moments of companionship when pottering around the yard.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Holly sculpted this life-sized piece after a field trip to Exmoor national park in 2023 during the rutting season. Moved by the rugged landscape, both craggy hard rocky outcrops and soft rolling moorland of heather, Holly invested these characteristics into the handling and feeling of this powerful sculpture. “On the hills of Dunkery Beacon I was struck by the power of these majestic creatures as they watch over their harem of hinds. As night fell their presence was still keenly felt as the valleys filled with the sound of their bellowing roars .”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Worked in clay in 2024 this elegant figure composition was sculpted after Holly spent some time with the Old Masters, primarily the great painter and anatomist George Stubbs. Perhaps one can feel this influence in the composition of this pair as they regard each other within a respectful bow. “After studying classic depictions of the thoroughbred I really enjoyed lengthening the leg and creating stronger planes within these works.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Holly sculpted the Round Head in 2021. This piece was worked in clay with the intention of creating the universal image of horse through the ages. This presents an archetype that provides more an abstract idea and contemporary idea of a horse. “I enjoy the how the form and patina combine to give this piece a fossil like quality. ”</image:caption>

<image:caption>This piece was sculpted in the spring of 2024, a piece to continue the farm yard series as Holly read a collection of essays about the importance of touch. This encouraged Holly to celebrate the tactile qualities of sculpture with this wonderfully round, blinkered pig. ‘Are we loosing touch with our senses as our experience becomes ever more mediated?’ - Richard Kearney</image:caption>
